Welcome to Nihonbashi
Welcome to Nihonbashi. The name refers to a single bridge over the river, and at the same time to the whole district that grew up around it. The spot where you now stand was once the very starting point from which the shape of the nation of Japan was decided. About four hundred years ago, this bridge was designated the origin of the main highways stretching across the entire country. Travelers, cargo, and even the letters carried by couriers all set out from this one point, and returned to this one point. Truly, all roads began here. At the foot of the bridge stood a fish market, and money changers and great merchant houses lined the streets, flourishing as the busiest center of commerce in Edo. Even now, in the curtains of long-established shops and the weight of the old buildings, that proud time lives on. Even the slightly strange sight of an expressway crossing overhead is proof of how this district has walked forward with the times. For a little while now, let's trace the story this bridge has witnessed, together. So let me begin with the history of Nihonbashi.
