Yet if I told you that just about four hundred years ago this vast city was nothing more than a quiet marshland thick with reeds, you might find it hard to believe. Tokyo's story begins the moment one warlord set foot on this land. A low, watery lowland near the sea was filled in by human hands, the rivers were rerouted, and a town began to rise. That town, called Edo, grew into one of the world's great cities, and at the dawn of the Meiji era it was renamed Tokyo, carrying on to the present day. Over the next hour or so, let's trace this city's grand story together. Once you know what layers of time lie beneath the scene before you, Tokyo will surely show you an entirely different face.
